LTE Cat M1 Cellular Modem
All Enetics' RTUs (GasTrack, GasPoint, VERIFI) include an integrated LTE Cat M1 cellular modem for connectivity to the EneticsEDGE cloud database. LTE Cat M1, also referred to as LTE-M, is a type of cellular technology targeted to IoT based instruments that require ultra-low power for long battery life and good connectivity. It's defined by 3GPP as part of the LTE (4G and 5G) standards and is commonly used for smart devices that send small amounts of data over long periods.
The key features of LTE Cat M1 technology are:
- Very low power consumption
- Very low data speeds (bandwidth)
- Extended coverage and improved signal penetration and underground use compared to standard Cat 1 LTE
- Utilizes the existing global LTE networks without the need for new hardware or infrastructure
- Supports device mobility (moving from site to site with differing cell tower connections)
- Lower cost of usage than standard LTE Cat 1 technology.
You can think of LTE Cat M1 as a low bandwidth, power efficient version of the LTE Cat 1 that we all use daily in our cellphones. Because the targeted environment is IoT instruments that use very little bandwidth, the cost of LTE Cat M1 data telemetry is lower than standard high bandwidth LTE Cat 1 technology.
